Tell us a little about your piece?

I received the letter 'N' as my challenge, and the pastel green, red and burgundy paper combination. The timing of this project in the December month made it very easy for me to come up with a fitting design concept… something super Christmassy! (aka Noël) The letter is made using all three colours, with the dark red as the base colour on the front, and pastel green as the base for the sides. Each side is covered in details of it’s contrasting colour. I then photographed the 3D letter on the pastel green background, and around with different lighting techniques that would pick up the true paper colours best.

What was the most challenging part of the brief?

The pastel green was proving quite a difficult colour to work with - especially when trying to light and photograph it properly, it somehow seemed to wash out completely against the red. I had to spend quite a bit of time on the set-up, lighting and photography of this piece. The paper we were given was only A3 in size, and as my letter N had to be quite large because of the details, I had to tape together about 6 sheets of paper to create the green backdrop, which meant I had to spend quite a bit of time on editing. It was fun to experiment with different techniques though! And at least now I’ll be more prepared next time a client asks me to use a pale pastel colour for a project - which up till now is not something I’ve worked with before!

What part of the brief did you enjoy the most?

Only using the 3 anonymously chosen colours. It was a fun challenge, but a challenge non the less. I won’t tell you how tempted I was to add in touch of little white details for contrast! But I’m very happy with how, due to the details and layers of patterns, the 3 colours seem to blend quite nicely. It was also super satisfying to create the organic shape of the letter N in 3D, despite it being super fidgety and time consuming. Once those curved were glued down and the back was placed on top.. ahh! Nothing more satisfying and motivating than when you

turn something you have designed that was previously flat - into a 3D self standing object!

How did you enjoy working with Senses Paper?

The papers were very smooth compared to the grainy / textured papers I usually work with, so this was quite a fun change. The weight and intensity of the red colours were really nice to work with, but the pastel green was a bit of a challenge to photograph. The colours look really nice in person though! So definitely something to bare in mind for when I’m making a physical/framed art piece that doesn’t necisarilly has to live on digitally. I like the ‘originality’ of the colours in their paper range, they seem to be slightly different than the more standard colours I often see.
